A 13-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the fatal stabbing of a 12-year-old girl in a crowded shopping area in Liverpool, police said.
Nadia Adnan was walking on Liverpool Street with a friend when she was attacked on Sunday. She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died shortly after arrival.
“I want to send my deepest sympathies to the girl’s family and also the family of the 13-year-old boy who has been arrested. The investigation will continue as a murder inquiry and the family have been updated and we are providing them with support,” Detective Chief Inspector Gary Furlong, from Merseyside Police, said.
Injuries suffered by Nadia “appear to be consistent with having been attacked from behind,” he said.
The area is popular with shoppers and known for packed nightspots.
Mildon District Council, which covers the area, said in a statement: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the tragic victim as they mourn this tragedy.”
Merseyside police said three other people were also injured.
