Priceless moments from the past: 15 of the best, from Aussie airports to Lewis Carroll

Is the future of travel featuring in Wonderland?

Tickets are flying for Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s latest movie adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s story. On the eve of its release, Chinese group Imagine Entertainment has announced a series of movie tour packages that include a trip to Wonderland and a behind-the-scenes look at the movie, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.

Depp’s portrayal of the Mad Hatter was famously inspired by a video clip of the character shot on grainy 16mm footage. Now Imagine Entertainment is hoping to recreate the magic of film and video with a tour that uses virtual reality headsets, 360-degree cameras and 3D video projection systems. Each tour costs US$20,000, but even those lucky enough to have secured the VIP tickets are still unable to attend the world premiere. Magic Manor is currently to be opened in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Has health come a cropper?

Which city is most polluted and yet is the most popular destination for tourists? That could be the question associated with Tokyo.

Japan is one of the most highly developed cities in the world, famous for its noodle restaurants, sleek buildings and colourful art galleries. But a new survey of pollution and air quality shows that the first choice for travellers as a destination is Copenhagen, followed by Frankfurt, New York, Sydney and Tokyo. Tokyo is 15th in the air quality rankings and had the world’s top-ranked concentration of nitrogen dioxide of 41 micrograms per cubic metre. While Vancouver ranked 15th with the most polluted air in the world with 21 micrograms per cubic metre.

This Aussie airport is fashion-forward…

New York didn’t score highly in the environmental aspect of the survey and on another measure Hong Kong came out top for its green credentials. The airport, however, may trump the others for its trendsetting fashionability.

At Sydney Airport the public is allowed to mix with private jets after a ten-year hiatus. Its arrival lounge also has a glass floor and green plants to contrast with the usual white-tile and carpet. Because of the runway, the airports cars park underground. To boot, it has a quirky gender-neutral change room toilet. It makes for a fun and quirky environment. At the same time, there are airline “sperm pool” facilities where suitcases are can be stored in large tanks containing around 120,000 sperm.

Can you spot the difference between Australia and the UK?

A startling study published on 21 November concluded that European tourists do not find Australia attractive, even though they have spent more than US$80 million visiting the country. What’s more, some 18% of those surveyed admitted they feel that neither Australia nor the UK is a good place to raise children. Can the stereotype of the British bashing a kangaroo be true?
