One of the biggest threats to Serena Williams’ reign in the women’s game is the loss of fitness. With more than 10,000 hits on her game, winning the Wimbledon title was never going to be easy for her.

There has been a lot of speculation, with some suggesting that Serena is done in the women’s game. But the 37-year-old Williams, who is still ranked world No. 1, knows that she has the ability to take her game to a new level.

Williams is now a coach at her son’s foundation in her native Louisiana.

The last time Serena was in the top 100 was in the summer of 2013, shortly after winning the Australian Open. She missed the Grand Slam finals in 2014 and the US Open in 2015 to have a total of two months off.

On the face of it, Williams’ absence was a long time for someone her age. But Williams, now 37, knew she had other things on her mind. The biggest was getting fit again and getting the confidence boost she needed back.

“It was never a lack of ability. It was a lack of confidence in myself. I just wasn’t there,” she explained.

“I’d had a really rough go at Wimbledon and I really wasn’t expecting to get through the US Open. I just went out to meet my son and I was trying to find a way to enjoy myself.”

At the time, Williams had just finished a training programme with a personal trainer in New Orleans. But she was suffering from a knee injury and the coach couldn’t keep her in shape.

“I still felt like it was a little bit of a setback, but the upside is that I did get healthy again mentally and physically,” she said at the time.
