Lionel Messi’s hat-trick of assists helped the Paris Saint-Germain to a 3-0 victory over Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1 on Sunday. He assisted Neymar and Edinson Cavani, who also scored. It was the Neymar’s first goal of the season and the Cavani’s second.
PSG, who sit atop the standings with 20 points, have won all four of their games so far. The win takes them into a three-way tie for the lead in table with Lyon and Toulouse, who are also 19 points clear.
PSG dominated from the start and Neymar thought he’d opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. He was one-on-one with the goalkeeper and forced him to make a diving save. The ball was cleared to Angel Di Maria but he shot over the bar. But in the second half Messi played the decisive role in both goals.
In the 54th minute he passed to Neymar on the edge of the box and Neymar sent the ball arcing over him and into the top left corner.
PSG gave Neymar a standing ovation when he was replaced by Cavani in the 63rd minute. Neymar has been linked with a move to Manchester United.
PSG is looking to move into the top two in Ligue 1.
