Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson is regarded as one of the best storytellers in golf. But then he reveals a secret about his tumultuous relationship with his wife.
Watson appeared on the “Pardon the Interruption” podcast this week and details his rocky relationship with his wife, Angie, which ultimately lead to their marriage coming to an end.
“She wanted to leave me. I called her on the phone and said, ‘Look I need to listen to you. You know what you can do for me,’” Watson told L.A. Times columnist Bill Plaschke. “I realized I was kidding myself. I couldn’t win. That was the gut-wrenching moment I realized I couldn’t win again. I kind of just gave up and blamed my wife.”
But that was the end of it. Watson explained how working out together helped bring him back to the game and ultimately bring them back together.
I realize I didn’t care as much about winning. I was all about me and not her. They say, ‘no one can give up on love.’”
But Angie Watson didn’t give up on the relationship and things got back on track. Watson now credits her effort to get him back on track for all of his success and success on the golf course.
“She kept me in it. Once she left the house I never felt so good. I felt alive. I really did. I wasn’t able to walk out. I was afraid to walk out.”
