Ilya Berezin made a major mistake in sending his son to study at the American School in Rome, and it left him deeply hurt. Now he wants to set the record straight: He was only trying to help his 18-year-old.

Emmanuel Tursunov was one of the school’s star athletes. He was the fastest man in his age group, and a favorite for the 200 and 400-meter hurdles at the championships. His father, Dmitry Tursunov, believed the boy would be a champion. Dmitry didn’t want to give up on him — he was his only son.

“We were both working for a better future,” Dmitri Tursunov says.

But Dmitri left his school in 2008, when news of Berezin’s decision to send his son overseas for four years hit the news. The former Olympic champion didn’t know what it would mean, Dmitri says, that people might judge him by his son’s choices.
