Hurricane G never really believed he would live past the age of 52. He had an early diagnosis of lung cancer that was only found after doctors discovered a small mass growing behind the rib cage.

The rapper, who turned 52 on Sunday, died Tuesday night of a “perforated colon.” The cause of death was revealed in a statement published by his wife Elizabeth with whom he had shared the news.

“When Hurricane G was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 51, he was diagnosed with a perforated colon that was later found to be cancerous,” her statement began. “He fought his way through this and beat the cancer. The love and support from the people he touched has been overwhelming and will be felt for the rest of his life.”

He was with a bandmate when he collapsed on a stage in front of a crowd of more than 3,000 at a “Get Low” music festival in Las Vegas last July. For a time, the cancer thought to be the cause of the mass was thought to have been benign, though it eventually took over his body.

The singer, who was in the midst of a tour, was hospitalized three times for surgery and treatment; in addition to having the mass found during an exam, he was treated for blood clots, lacerations, and respiratory failure.

The disease’s origin is still unclear, according to an autopsy report.
