Daniil Medvedev had no answer for Nick Kyrgios’ serve, but he was able to survive it to reach a second round quarter-final at the US Open on Monday.

After being broken by Kyrgios on his opening serve in the opening game, the 19-year-old looked determined to come back from a set down. He came up with a break in the eighth game, then broke again to go 3-1 up. He served out the match to reach his first grand slam quarter-final.

But then faced Kyrgios again, and it was his serve that got the better of him as the American broke back and took the next game in a tiebreaker. Again there was no answer as Kyrgios got another break in the second set, this time on a backhand. Kyrgios eventually took the set and then went on to win that game 6-3.

Medvedev, who started the season ranked 38 and was at No 33, was a late arrival to the tournament but he was among six quarter-finalists ranked between No 1 and No 12.

Medvedev has been particularly good on hard, fast grass courts and he will be a welcome addition to the US Open’s ‘Big Three’ of Juan Martin Del Potro, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Medvedev will play either Marin Cilic or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals, while Kyrgios may play either Juan Monaco or Janko Tipsarev.

Kyrgios has never reached the semi-finals at a major event, losing all four of his previous finals at the time of his last grand slam appearance.

The 19-year-old Kyrgios has reached the rounds of 16 and quarter-finals of the major events in each of the last two seasons at the US Open.

Daniil Medvedev has beaten Roger Federer 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(6) in the US Open quarter-finals, and reached the semifinals the last time he played at the tournament in 2012.
